Packing a bowl takes about thirty seconds, but how you do it decides whether the bowl pulls easy and burns evenly or clogs, runs hot and wastes half of what you put in. The method below works for a glass hand pipe, a spoon, a bubbler or the bowl on a bong. It comes down to three things: the grind, the pack and how you light it.
What you need
- Your herb
- A grinder (or clean fingers in a pinch)
- A pipe, bubbler or bong with a clean bowl
- A lighter
- A pipe screen (optional, but it helps): stainless steel or brass
- A poker to tamp and clear the bowl, like the RAW wooden poker
Step 1: Start with a clean bowl
Old ash and resin block airflow and make every hit taste stale. Tap out any ash and make sure the hole at the bottom is clear: hold the bowl up to the light or blow through it gently. If it's sticky or the pull feels tight, give it a proper clean first. Our guide shows how to clean a glass pipe or bowl in about half an hour.
Step 2: Grind it medium

For a bowl you want a medium grind: pieces about the size of a grain of rice, not powder. Too fine and it falls through the hole or packs so tight you can't pull through it. Too chunky and it burns unevenly and goes out. A 2-piece grinder gives you a coarser grind; a 4-piece with a screen gives you a finer one and collects kief at the bottom.
Step 3: Add a screen (optional)
A small metal screen sits in the bottom of the bowl and stops ash and small pieces from getting pulled into your mouth or into the water of a bong. Press it in so it sits flat and snug. No screen? Put one slightly larger piece of herb over the hole first to act as a plug.
Step 4: Pack in layers, loose to firm

This is the part most people get wrong. Fill the bowl in two or three layers instead of all at once:
- Bottom: a loose layer of slightly bigger pieces. They let air through and keep small bits from blocking the hole.
- Middle: your medium grind, pressed down gently with a fingertip or poker.
- Top: a final layer, level with the rim, pressed lightly so the surface is flat.
Aim for the firmness of a lightly packed sponge: it should spring back a little when you press it. Too loose and it burns away in one hit; too tight and you can't pull through it.
Step 5: Test the pull

Before you light it, take a gentle draw through the mouthpiece without a flame. Air should move easily. If it's hard to pull, the pack is too tight or the hole is blocked: loosen the top with your poker and try again.
Step 6: Corner it when you light it

Instead of putting the flame in the middle and torching the whole bowl, "corner" it: hold the flame to one edge and light only a small section as you pull. The rest stays fresh for the next person or the next hit, so every hit tastes clean instead of like the leftovers of the last one. Hold the lighter above the bowl and angle the flame down onto the edge, and keep your thumb clear of the hot glass. When you're done, let go of the carb (the small hole on the side of a pipe) or pull the bowl on a bong to clear the smoke. Our guide to using a bong covers that part step by step.
How much should you pack?
That depends on the bowl. Most hand pipe bowls hold around a quarter to half a gram; most standard bong bowls hold about half a gram to a gram. If you're new or smoking alone, pack about half the bowl. You can always pack another, and a half bowl burns more evenly than an overstuffed one.
Common mistakes
- Grinding to dust: it clogs the hole and gets pulled through.
- Packing it as tight as you can: no airflow, so you work hard for a weak hit.
- Torching the whole bowl at once: it burns hot and harsh and wastes most of it.
- Smoking out of a dirty bowl: resin makes everything taste burnt. Keep a cleaner on hand.
Keep it fresh and quiet
Store what you didn't smoke in an airtight stash jar so it doesn't dry out, and keep smell down with a Smokebuddy or odor spray.
FAQ
Should you pack a bowl tight or loose?
In between. Loose at the bottom for airflow, firmer on top so it burns evenly. It should spring back a little when you press it.
What does it mean to corner a bowl?
Lighting only one edge of the bowl at a time instead of the whole top, so the rest stays fresh for the next hit.
Do I need a screen?
No, but a screen keeps ash and small pieces out of your mouth and out of the bong water. A larger piece of herb over the hole works if you don't have one.
Why won't my bowl stay lit?
Usually the pack is too tight, the herb is damp, or the hole is clogged. Loosen it with a poker, make sure the bowl is clean and pull steadily while you light it.
Is packing a bong bowl different from a pipe?
Same method. Bong bowls are usually a little bigger, so they hold more, and you pull the bowl out at the end instead of using a carb.
